After listening to several podcasts highlighting the presence of heavy metals and potentially microplastics in tap water, I've spent the past year on a quest to discover water bottles capable of purifying my water, ensuring I stay hydrated with the cleanest and most sanitized water possible. That’s why I was so excited to get my hands on the PureMax 4D from WAATR and put it to the test.

First Impressions
Upon receiving my WAATR PureMax 4D water bottle, I was pleasantly surprised by its branded packaging. However, upon unboxing the bottle, I found myself slightly overwhelmed by all the information in the manual detailing information on charging and how to use the self-cleaning feature. Since I'm usually one for a quick grab-and-go approach, I made a point to set aside some time to sit down with the manual and grasp how this travel water bottle operates before taking it along on my adventures.
Quality of Materials
Crafted from pro-grade stainless steel, the PureMax 4D has triple insulation and a superior powder-coated finish for maximum durability and temperature retention. Its wide bottle mouth allows you to easily add ice cubes to keep beverages cold and comes with a convenient rainbow handle for easy portability. Additionally, these bottles are TSA pre-approved, making them the ideal travel companion for those constantly on the go.
Water Purification Technology
This is the aspect where the PureMax 4D truly distinguishes itself from other self-cleaning water bottles. Known as 4D Purification™, the water purification technology in this bottle uses Dual UV-C LEDs positioned strategically to provide a time-dependent treatment to the water prior to its standard 3-Dimensional filtration. This results in an extra layer of purification for the water that flows through the spout.
TL;DR — This water bottle cleans the hell out of your water by filtering out microplastics, heavy metals, and various chemicals including harmful ‘forever chemicals’ like PFAS. Activating the purification process is simple – just press the activation button twice, and the UV-C LED will run for 1 minute, with the indicator light changing from blue to green upon completion. For Ultra-Pure Mode Purification from questionable water sources, press the button three times to run the same UV-C LED for three minutes. There's also a self-cleaning function that activates every hour for 15 seconds to maintain bottle hygiene, but I recommend disabling this to conserve battery life, as it can drain the battery quickly.
Note that the water bottle comes with two filters, but you’ll need to prime the filter first by soaking it in a bowl of water for more than 15 minutes before use. Once it is done, flush the filter under running water for 2 minutes and place it back into the lid.
Charging
Charging this water bottle is a straightforward process. The magnetic charger easily attaches to the top, and you can connect it to your computer or an outlet via USB. It took approximately 3-4 hours for my bottle to reach a full charge, during which it emits an orange light, changing to green once charging is complete. When you're on the go, you can check the battery status by pressing the activation button once: green indicates 40% or more charge remaining, orange suggests 11% to 39%, and red signifies a low battery level of 1% to 10%.
Overall Design
In comparison to other water bottles, the PureMax 4D is heavy-duty. What stands out for me is its user-friendly charging and UV Sanitizer activation. Additionally, it offers the flexibility to sanitize objects such as keys or phones by placing them inside and pressing the button three times to activate Ultra-Pure Mode. While this feature is convenient, I personally don't anticipate using the bottle for sanitizing other items. There's also a Drink Water Reminder option, but similar to the self-cleaning feature, I usually turn it off to preserve battery life.
I also wanted to mention a few drawbacks to the PureMax 4D. Firstly, it requires tilting the bottle back to drink as the cap doesn't function as a straw. The time-dependent flow regulator in the cap causes water to trickle out, making it a bit challenging to consume large quantities quickly. Furthermore, it makes subtle squeaking sounds while drinking, and there's also no indicator that lets me know that I should change the filter.
Value for Money
With a starting price of $189 for the 40 oz. size, I find this bottle to be relatively costly when compared to other options.
