I’ve wanted to upgrade my heavy YETI water bottle for quite some time now. So when I decided to finally pull the trigger on a self-cleaning water bottle, I opted for the uber-popular LARQ bottle.
The following is a review of the 24 oz. LARQ Bottle Movement PureVis™ Non-Insulated and in Black/Onyx.
First Impressions
My water bottle arrived in a sleek, compact box adorned with stylish LARQ branding. Upon unboxing, I discovered a small white envelope containing an informative pamphlet outlining the functionality of the water bottle. What truly stood out was the simplicity of the instructions. Unlike my encounters with alternative self-cleaning water bottles which often feature complex technology and gadgets, the clarity of these instructions instilled confidence in me. Merely by perusing the guidelines, I could see that operating and utilizing this bottle would be effortless, and I was excited to put it to the test.
Quality of Materials
Crafted from exceptionally lightweight stainless steel, this water bottle comes with a detachable sleeve designed for easy gripping and removal when it's time for cleaning. The weight of the stainless steel surprised me; while I usually switch from my YETI water bottle to my Nalgene for camping and hikes due to the substantial weight difference, the LARQ's featherlight stainless steel has me wanting to make the switch for good. All in all, it's evident that LARQ has invested in premium materials that are poised to endure the test of time.
Water Purification Technology
Operating the water purification feature is incredibly straightforward. To initiate the process, a single press of the top cap button activates Normal Mode, while two presses engage Adventure Mode. In Normal Mode, the cap breathes a sky blue color for approximately 60 seconds before automatically turning off, indicating the completion of the purification process. Adventure Mode, ideal for questionable water sources, involves a pulsating blue light and a slightly extended purification time of about 3 minutes.
This water bottle also boasts several safety functionalities. An orange light activates when the cap is triggered outside the bottle, and it pulsates orange when the liquid inside the bottle is too hot. But what I love most about this water bottle is its intelligent activation feature. It conveniently switches to self-cleaning mode for about 10 seconds every two hours. If you’re planning on traveling and wish to conserve battery, you have the option to disable this by holding down the cap button for 5 seconds.
Cap Charging
Charging this water bottle is incredibly easy. All that's required is to connect the cap to the USB charger and allow it to charge for approximately an hour. During the charging process, the cap breathes a light green color. When the charging is complete, a consistent green light shines, while a double flash of the green light indicates a low battery status of the cap.
The best part of all? A single charge can last for up to 1 month -- but of course, this depends on which modes you use. I typically deactivate the Intelligent Self-Cleaning Mode and only use the Normal Mode as opposed to the Adventure Mode, ensuring the battery sustains me for multiple weeks.
Overall Design
What I love most about the LARQ water bottle is how sleek and sexy the design is compared to alternatives. The water purification technology isn’t over complicated and it’s incredibly easy to use. When it comes to design, LARQ hit a solid 10 out of 10 and I’m excited to continue investing in other self-cleaning bottles from them in the future.
Value for Money
With a price tag of $89 for the 24 oz. bottle without insulation, it certainly falls into the higher price range. However, considering it’s something I use every day and with the added assurance that I'm consuming clean water devoid of any questionable bacteria, it brings me a sense of comfort that rationalizes the cost. Furthermore, if you’re looking to upgrade to the larger insulated model, the incremental increase is relatively minor ($118 as opposed to $89).
